Looking back at goEast 2004 104 full-length and short films from 16 Middle and Eastern European countries, among them 14 German and 3 international premieres have been presented at the festival, accompanied by a symposium, panel discussions and several special events. 6500 visitors participated, among them around 90 international guests and 180 professionals – that is the impressing result of one week of goEast festival in Wiesbaden 2004. Nine feature and six documentary films competed for the awards with a total prize money of 27.500 Euro, which have been handed out by an international five-member jury presided by the Hungarian director Ibolya Fekete. The award for the Best Film with a prize money of € 10.000 (sponsored by the Deutsches Filminstitut) went to ROADS TO KOKTEBEL, Russia 2003, by Boris Chlebnikov and Aleksej Popogrebskij. The Documentary Award of the Hertie Foundation, along with € 10.000, went to Stephan Komandarev for his film ALPHABET OF HOPE, Bulgaria 2003. The Award for the Best Director, endowed with € 7.500 by the city of Wiesbaden, went to Benedek Fliegauf for his film DEALER , Hungary 2004. Honourable mentions were made of A BAR AT VICTORIA STATION, Poland 2003 by Leszek David, THE LAST TRAIN Russia 2003, by Aleksej German jr and of OLD WOMEN, Russia 2003 by Gennadij Sidorov. For the second time, the FIPRESCI gave out the award of the International Film Critics at the festival to TOMORROW’S WEATHER by Polish director Jerzy Stuhr. The best short films of the Students’ Competition had been awarded by the audience each with a prize money of € 750, sponsored by the HypoVereinsbank. In the category for Documentaries and Experimental Films BALL OF FAME by Gregor M. Schubert from the University for Design Offenbach took the honours. The Award for Short Feature went to THE END OF THE GAME by Petar Oreskovic, from the Academy of Dramatic Art – ADU in Zagreb. BADINERIE by Dragomir Sholev from the State Academy for Theatre and Cinematic Arts – NATFA in Sofia won the award for Best Animated Film. |
