/ KASHCHEY THE IMMORTAL
DIRECTOR: ALEKSANDR ROU
USSR 1944 (RESTORED 1962)
A fairy tale beginning with a barbaric attack by black knights on an
idyllic Russian village. A mushroom man guides the hero Nikita into the
realm of the allegedly immortal bone-man Kashchey, who has abducted the
beautiful Mariya, Nikita’s fiancée. Nikita flies on a magic
carpet to Kashchey’s palace, where he liberates Mariya and conquers
Kashchey in a duel reminiscent of scenes in Eisenstein’s ALEKSANDR
NEVSKIJ. Combining self-ironical sequences with deep faith in the inevitability
of Russian victory over foreign (vulgo: German) barbarians, the film translates
various fairy-tale motifs – Russian, oriental, German – into
impressive fantasy-animation elements.
