PIRATY XX VEKA / TWENTIETH CENTURY PIRATES
DIRECTOR: BORIS DUROV
USSR 1979

The Soviet freighter “Nesin” transports opium from Southeast Asia to Vladivostok for the domestic pharmaceuticals industry. After a group of pirate boards the ship on high sea and blows it apart, the Soviet crew takes refuge on an island which the robbers also use as a hideaway. With the aid of an island woman determined to avenge the brutalities and rapes perpetrated by the pirates, the crew prepares for the attack. After a series of action-packed confrontations complete with underwater scenes and karate fights, the island is at last free of the pirates. This first Soviet action film to emulate the Hollywood blockbuster attracted 87.6 million viewers when first released.
