Competition

The ten feature films and six documentaries showing in competition at goEast reflect the current filmmaking landscape of Central and Eastern Europe. In line with our festival regulations, all the films were made in countries of Central or Eastern Europe or co-produced with the substantial participation of one or more countries in that region, and were completed within the last two years. While many of these new films are striking for their confrontation with the difficult social realities in their country of origin, there is no hint of finger-wagging – it is more the case that they examine the problems side by side with figures struggling to lead a dignified life. All films are screened in the original language with English subtitles. Films showing out of competition are GRBAVICA, the feature debut of young Bosnian director Jasmila Zbanic (Golden Bear, Berlin 2006), and SILENI / LUNACY, the latest film by Jan Svankmajer, the legendary master of Czech surrealism.
An independent jury chaired by German film historian Ulrich Gregor (who was longstanding Director of the International Forum of New Cinema at Berlin) presents the awards. The jury further includes director Boris Mitic (Serbia, Documentary Award at goEast 2005 for LIJEPA DYANA / PRETTY DYANA), Mirsad Purivatra, Director of Sarajevo Film Festival (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Éva Vezér, who is Director of the Hungarian Film Union, and the Russian producer Elena Yatsura (Non Stop Production). The awards presented are the Skoda Award (“Golden Lily”) for Best Film, endowed with 10,000 Euros, and the award for Best Director from the City of Wiesbaden, endowed with 7,500 Euros. The documentary most impressively outlining the ongoing transformation process in Central and Eastern Europe receives the Hertie-Foundation Documentary Award (10,000 Euros). In 2006 the German Foreign Ministry is introducing an award explicitly honouring “artistic originality which creates cultural diversity”, endowed with 2,000 Euros. A jury of the FIPRESCI organization further presents the International Film Critics’ Award.
The directors introduce their films at the screenings in the Caligari Film Bühne, and afterwards answer questions from the audience. After the last screening of the day, there is opportunity for further discussion at the Villa Clementine, which is open to all festival visitors. Repeat screenings of all feature films take place in the new festival cinema Alpha, while documentaries are repeated in the Bellevue-Saal.
