NEHA / THE TENDERNESS
CZECHOSLOVAKIA 1991
DIRECTOR: Martin Sulik, 104 MIN
Martin Sulik’s visually and musically surprisingly
mature feature film debut. The 20-year-old Simon accidentally meets
Maria and Victor. The two are older than him, but both are just going
through a relationship-crisis and have psychological problems similar
to those of their new acquaintance. The couple includes Simon in
their intimate affairs. Especially the self-confident and charismatic
Viktor tries to meddle with Simon’s private life. At times
it seems like Maria uses Simon to free herself from her domineering
boyfriend. But maybe she and Viktor are only playing a risky game with
the young man in order to save their relationship. Nobody here seems to
be without blame… NEHA is not only an intense study of the dark
side of relationships, but also a film about the general crisis of values.
