ZIVOT JE CUDO
/ LIFE IS A MIRACLE
France, Serbia and Montenegro 2004
Director: Emir Kusturica, 154 MIN
In his proven surreal style, Kusturica directs a Romeo-and-Juliet tale
against the backdrop of the eruption of the war in Bosnia. Luka, a Serbian
train-engineer, moves with his family to a remote region, where he is
supposed to build a railway-line. The born optimist ignores the first
indications of impending disaster. When violence suddenly erupts, things
happen rather fast: his wife leaves him and his son is imprisoned by the
Bosnians. Luka is appointed as the guard for a female Muslim prisoner
– and falls in love with her. But will he exchange Sabaha against
his son? Animals play as big a part in Kusturicas tragically comical burlesque
as the gypsy-techno-rock music of his “No Smoking Orchestra”.
