WIELKY TYDZIEN
/ HOLY WEEK
Poland, Germany, France 1995
Director: Andrzej Wajda, 90 MIN
Wajda, who himself was a member of the resistance, has tackled Poland’s
tragic history during World War II several times. HOLY WEEK is based on
the story of the same title by Jerzy Andrzejewski, the first literary
work about the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in October 1943: passengers of a
tram under fire flee into the houses nearby. This is how Irena, a Jew,
once again meets the love of her youth, Jan. Jan and his family hide the
Jewish refugee – but in the face of the SS’s brutal excesses,
he has to realize that decency and helpfulness can’t persevere in
the face of absolute evil.
