  BRZEZINA / THE BIRCH WOOD

BRZEZINA / THE BIRCH WOOD
Poland 1970
Director: Andrzej Wajda, 99 MIN

In this impressive psychological drama, Stanislaw – suffering from an incurable lung disease – returns from Switzerland to Poland to die. He visits his older brother Boleslaw, a forest ranger, who recently had to bury his young wife. In the silence of the woods, the desperately fun-loving Stanislaw and the deeply suffering Boleslaw clash. The farmer’s daughter Malina offers the younger brother a last chance at love, while the older brother’s longings remain unfulfilled… This homage to life, based on a novelette by Jaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz, captivates the audience with its expressive performances, its subtle use of colour and the beauty and depths of the forest.
