SIGNATURE

Time and again we stumble across films that amaze, irritate, unsettle and sometimes annoy us, because they don’t fit into the patterns we are used from the cinema. This happened from the first selection-process for goEast: there were films whose aesthetics or world outlook had turned their back on general film-aesthetic developments, films that were so subjective, individualistic, vehement or anarchically-different that they did not seem to fit into our competition – it simply would have been too difficult to find the necessary criteria to compare them with the other films. All other sections would have been a difficult fit for these films, too. In our new section SIGNATURE, Swetlana Sikora, the artistic director of goEast, presents her personal selection of films that seem to be diametrically opposed to everything around them. Even amongst themselves they are hard to reduce to a common denominator. But there is one thing they all have in common: they deserve an audience and a discussion. Let the debate begin.
