THE MIRROR
/ ZERKALO
USSR 1974
D: Andrej Tarkovskij, 108 MIN
A faceless narrator, divorced and the father of a child, reflects on
his life: his destitute childhood in the country, his relationship with
his mother, the failure of his marriage. Andrej Tarkovskij’s experimental
cinematic essay is considered the brilliant director’s most personal
work. He combines fictional scenes with historical footage, blends black-and-white
and colour sequences, never using a linear structure: instead of representing
classic narrative cinema, THE MIRROR turns out to be an intoxicating,
poetic train-of-thought.
