The old settlement of Matyora – situated on an island in a river – is supposed to make way for a dam. The island’s inhabitants – whose culture, tradition and stories are vividly rendered – put up a committed, but in the end unsuccessful fight against the flooding of their home. Klimov’s film is permeated by the “apocalyptic” mood of the eighties. It evokes a deeply humanistic and pro-environmental notion of home that seems to take on the upcoming social upheaval.
