EAST FROM THE WEST OR THE DISCREET CHARME OF THE MEDIA /
NYUGATTÓL KELETRE, AVAGY A MÉDIA DISZKRÉT BÁJA

HUNGARY 1993
Directed by: István Dárday, Gyorgyi Szalai,100 MIN

The main award of a competition in post-communist Budapest is a gigantic television-set that can’t be turned off. Ivandžos and his friends take it on an old Russian truck to his new owner, who lives in a remote Eastern Hungarian village. But the man they want to find has been imprisoned for spraying communist graffiti.
During the trip, the truck’s crew engages in black-market deals, has love affairs, takes breaks at amusement arcades and gets in trouble with the police. A bitter, ironic road-movie that shows the problems of a post-communist Hungary dealing with an onslaught of western media on a world ruled by completely different images.
