DISTANT LIGHTS / LICHTER
GERMANY 2002

The award-winning drama tells a number of interwoven stories from the borderland between Frankfurt on the Oder and Slubice. A Polish cabdriver desperately tries to raise enough money for his daughter’s communion-dress; an unlucky mattress-salesman wants to save his store from bankruptcy; a Ukrainian family of refugees is being defrauded by a gang of people-smugglers; a young German architect finds out that his Polish ex-girlfriend works as a call girl. A film about existential needs and the search for a little bit of happiness.
