Looking back at goEast 2003

Here are some facts and figures: 107 full-length and short films from 20 countries, among them 16 international and German premières as well as one world première, 5,800 visitors, among them 90 invited guests and 180 professionals - that is the impressing result of one week of goEast in Wiesbaden in the year 2003.

15 current productions from 10 countries competed for the awards with a total prize money of € 27,500. The international five-member Jury presided by Czech director Jirí Menzel came to the following conclusion:

The Award for Best Film with a prize-money of € 10,000 (sponsored by the Deutsches Filminstitut) went to the Czech Film THE KEY FOR DETERMINING DWARFS, OR THE LAST TRAVEL OF LEMUEL GULLIVER by Martin Šulik. The Award for Best Director (€ 7,500 sponsored by the City of Wiesbaden) went to the Hungarian film BALLROOOM DANCING by Livia Gyarmathy. The Hertie-Foundation Documentary Award (endowed with € 10,000) went to the Bulgarian film BREAD OVER THE FENCE by Stephan Komandarev. Special mention was made of ANGEL ON THE RIGHT, Tajikistan, 2002, by Dzamsed Usmonov.
The International Critic’s Prize has been presented for the first time this year in Wiesbaden and was bestowed upon THE SLEEPWAKERS, Hungary, 2002, directed by Bence Miklauzic. FIPRESCI, the International Federation of Film Critics, also made special mention of BREAD OVER THE FENCE.
The Audience Awards for the Student Film Competition have been granted in three categories (each endowed with € 750). The Award for Best Documentary and Experimental Film went to Sylvie Hohlbaum, and Gregor Schubert from the HfG Offenbach won with WHEN THE ICEBERG CALVES. In the category Short Feature Film, Martin Turk from the AGRFT Ljubljana, Slovenia, received an award for THE EXCURSION, and in the category Animation Film, Tillmann Vogt from the FH Mainz won with TOBI.

3sat, the media partner of goEast, will again purchase films that will be screened in the competition. BALLROOM DANCING, which won the Award for Best Director, has already been purchased.
