Competition

Nine features and six documentaries in goEast’s Competition represent the current state of filmmaking in Central and Eastern Europe. According to the festival-regulations, these are all Eastern and Central European productions or co-productions with substantial participation from these countries; all produced in the last two years. This year’s competition shows how filmmakers – some of them quite young – deal with the history and the political changes of their home-countries in different ways, but always by telling individual stories. The films are shown in their original version with English subtitles. Out-of-Competition, we will also show NIKI & FLO, Romanian director Lucian Pintilie’s newest feature film.
An independent jury chaired by director Ibolya Fekete (Hungary) will give out the awards. The main award, the “Golden Lily” for best film, is endowed with 10.000 Euros; the award of the city of Wiesbaden for best direction is endowed with 7.500 Euros. The documentary most impressively showing the changes in Central and Eastern Europe will be awarded with the Hertie-Foundation Documentary Award (10.000 Euros).
The directors will personally introduce their films at the screenings in the Caligari cinema. After the screening, they will take questions from the audience. After the last competition screening of the day, there will opportunity for further discussion at the Villa Clementine. All visitors of the festival are warmly welcome there. All features will be shown once more at the Bambi cinema.
