goEast Forum:

"An Ordeal for Europe?
The threat of War and the Question of European Identity"

Villa Clementine, Saturday, March 29th at 4 pm

There's reason enough for a discussion on the political issue of the day; so goEast is inviting you to come to the Villa Clementine: "An Ordeal for Europe? The threat of War and the Question of European Identity" is the question on Saturday, March 29th at 4 pm, and the international guests may find a platform with this discussion to debate the present attitude of the governments, the mood of the people and the media of the different countries and give their own statements on the war in Iraq. Donald Rumsfeld, US-Secretay of Defense, may try to divide an "Old" from a "New" Europe and thus segregate East from West at the same time - obviously for strategic reasons. Nevertheless there are real political ditches right through Eastern Europe as well - each country has its own reasons and motifs for its position. It is an important goal of goEast, therefore, to intensify the contact and the dialogue between East and West and to offer a platform where we get to know each other better - which is an essential condition for a common Europe of course.

Moderation: Gerd Koenen, chairman of the Palais Jalta (eastern/western european culture and study centre, Frankfurt). He works as a freelancer for important German newspapers and is author of various books (e.g. "Das rote Jahrzehnt. Unsere kleine Kulturrevolution 1967-77" / "The Red Decade. Our little cultural revolution 1867-77", 2001). He is historian and an expert on Eastern Europe (among others he participated at Lew Kopelew's project "West-östliche Spiegelungen" / "West-Eastern Reflections").
